San Andreas’s main character, Carl “CJ” Johnson, fled Los Santos, a city tearing itself to pieces with countless accounts of gang warfare, the drug business and corruption with it, as a younger man because of difficulties of facing guilt about his brother Brian’s death. Hoping to free himself from these anxieties, CJ set himself apart from his family and friends by leaving Los Santos for the east coast city of Liberty City. Five years now have gone by, CJ’s mother has been killed in their own home and mass chaos has hit Los Santos, so CJ decides to go back to Grove Street.

“It was time to go home.”

Upon arriving back in Los Santos CJ is pulled over by Crash, or in other words Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Polaski, who for some reason seem to have it out for Carl and the rest of the Johnson family. They arrest CJ stating that he killed one of their fellow officers. CJ was being framed. Crash then is thrown from the car only to be in enemy gang territory, Balla’ Territory. Here in this threatening place without any weapons, CJ is forced to ride a bicycle as his only means of escape. Pedaling at his full potential, Carl makes his way back to the Grove.

Through Carl’s endeavors to follow in attempts to make a name for himself, clear his name of framing, and to take back the streets of Los Santos for The Grove, he will be taken all across the vast terrain of the state of San Andreas. You will see sites ranging from the town of Angel Pine and the great Mount Chiliad all the way to the electric beauty of the lights on the strip of Las Venturas. It will be necessary for Carl to eat, work out, change clothes for both sex appeal and for respect, and learn many vital skills in order for him to succeed. Carl will see both many new faces and many new places, people trying to help, hurt, trick, and convince Carl will be everywhere. Gain the respect of the Grove again, and they will never let you down.

Sean "Sweet" Johnson

Sweet Johnson, CJ’s street smart stubborn older brother, is one of the leading members of the Grove Street Families. Sweet is so devoted to the Grove and the Grove Street Families that he would put any thing before them, even at the expense of his own life. Five years before when CJ fled the Grove because of Brian’s death, Sweet did not even acknowledge the fact that Carl existed. Now five years have gone by and with the death of their mother, Sweet called CJ and told him about the unfortunate news. Sweet feels that Carl has to do a lot to make up for deserting the Grove, and only when CJ proves himself to both the Grove and to Sweet personally, will they go back to a united brotherly love.

Lance “Ryder” Wilson

Voice acting for Ryder by MC Eiht, a rapper born in California who starred in movies such as Menace II Society.

Often viewed as a virtual look a like to the Rapper Easy-E from the rap group NWA, Lance “Ryder” Wilson becomes a very vital character in the game. Marked for his bad habits and short temper, Ryder has a short fuse waiting to be lit by even the slightest remark. When CJ returns to the Grove, Ryder, just like Sweet, cannot forgive Carl for fleeing to Liberty after the death of Brian for five years. Amongst many other insults directed at Carl, Ryder constantly finds fault with CJ’s driving abilities. Ryder, a true criminal of Los Santos, makes his first appearance when he takes CJ to Old Reece for a Hair Cut, and then trying and not succeeding at the attempted robbery of the local Well Stacked Pizza Co. Ryder will prove to test the loyalty of CJ to the Grove…

Melvin “Big Smoke” Harris

Voice Acting for Big Smoke by Clifton Powell, Credited for Movies: Brothers in Arms(2005), Menace II Society, Rush Hour.

Melvin Harris, more commonly referred to as Big Smoke because of his weight, is a very close friend to the Johnson family and the whole rest of the Grove. Holding an appetite that could satisfy a Cow, Big Smoke makes his first appearance when he tries to attack Carl when CJ walks into his house. Big Smoke comes lunging at him with a baseball bat. Big Smoke will lead Carl on many ventures and again Big Smoke will prove CJ’s loyalty to the Grove. Big Smoke’s aspirations of a Drug Syndicate established in San Fierro are very high but the Grove does not support drugs. Could it be possible that Smoke’s greed could over take his common sense and loyalty to his friends??

Kendl Johnson

Kendl Johnson, CJ’s sister and only supporter when he arrives back in Los Santos, plays a minor role in the game but a very influential role. Acting as a voice of reason to the Grove, Kendl contributes many ideas and many headaches to Sweet because of her relationship with a Vario named Cesar. Cesar becomes a big part of the game becoming a close friend to the Grove and to Carl. The Grove, Cesar, and Carl do mutual favors for each other attributing to many adventures in the game. Kendl is kind of her own person and does not play that big of a part in the game.
